Matt, you should have a line in your config.sys to expand your environment space. Mine is: SHELL=C:\COMMAND.COM /p /e:992 The 992 tells DOS to reserve 992 bytes (62 paragraphs) for the environment. I chose 992 because it was the maximum that earlier DOSs would allow and it is plenty for me anytime. Pick a number, any number, over 256. I just checked with Arachne. Online and shelled to DOS, my environment has 232 bytes used. If you have a path that goes all the way across the screen you may need more. The default is 160 bytes - at least with my DOS. - - Clarence Verge - -- - - Help stamp out FATWARE. Hi Jeff, on Monday, 17.01.00 you wrote: JM> With an IBM 286 with 1 meg ram, can I browse the WWW with Arachne? As you already got some advice, I would like to add that you could try to install a EMS Memory Expansion Board into your IBM 286 - if you're able to find it. I was lucky not long ago with such a search in some usenet newsgroups where computer hardware is traded - payed only about 3 $ for it and now I have 12 MB RAM in my 386. Did you already take a look to this computer's mainboard? If there are many (more than 10) *empty* equal chip sockets, then you can try to find the fitting single DRAM's which would expand your RAM, too. Or you can change the existing DRAM's with chips with a higher capacity - like from 256k to 1M in each memory bank. The thing is when you got more than 1 MB RAM, Arachne can use it for different purposes: you could install SMARTDRV.EXE (no excessive hard disk usage anymore) or even install a ramdisk, so that Arachne can write her temporary files to it, which would speed up several tasks during an Arachne session. ... und wech... am Sonntag, den 23.01.00 um 11:32... - -- ## CrossPoint v3.11 ## * ZQWKPro v1.2 [unregistered] ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 23 Jan 2000 21:15:11 +0100 From: Hans-Juergen Bardenhagen <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Subject: Stateside goodie purchases Hi Gregy, on Monday, 17.01.00 you wrote: GJF> ...BTW did you ever just get stuck at 3000-5000....no, you couldn't, GJF> with the times you clocked....All the boxes on my options page that GJF> control that, except for disable ADDs, are checked, including the GJF> fast JPEG box....other than those, I have left the 486 defaults GJF> set the way they installed.....maybe I need to allocate more "image GJF> memory or something......time to start doing some tweaking.... Here's one alternative. If you have access to a second computer. Connect them together with either a nul-modem cable or a laplink cable. This will make it posible to copy each drive from one machine directly over to it's "duplicate" drive on the other. If this is not feasable. The least expensive methode would be an external ZIP drive. It can be seen even when reloading the site from cache. This problem occurs ONLY in standard VGA mode (640x480) and only when you select VGA 640x480 16 colors or 640x480 grayscale in setup. Any other 640x480 mode is OK. This must be why I also saw it in EGA. Probably, if setup recognizes your Video adapter, you will be allright. To check into possible reasons why no one else saw this problem I borrowed a HiRes monitor again and loaded egghead. This gave me a chance to examine the 800x600 and 1024x768 screens and I must say I certainly prefer the 640x480 - without the toolbar. Dawley" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Subject: Video Mode Hello all, In installing Arachne 1.60 I picked VGA 640x480 16 colors in the left column, and found that either of these would work in the right column: 1. 640x480 1MB Hicolor 2. 640x480 512 K 256 color. Now my problem is I'm not getting the color quality on web pages, images, ads, etc. that I had before with Arachne 1.50. When I pick VESA in the left column, none of the right column choices work. Will there be other choices in further betas of 1.60? - --------------------------------------------------- An update: I went to this page: http://lumahai.soest.hawaii.edu/gifs/usa_ir.gif (This is a 280K GOES 8 weather image) and Arachne said "1036x810, 128 colors" at the top when the image was downloaded and done. I checked the image in Netscape 4.08, and apparently I do not have more than 256 colors on this machine, and must not have had better color in Arachne 1.50. Checking some images using Vueprint 4.3, I only get 256 colors. Thanks, Michael L. Dawley Pearl, Mississippi ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 23 Jan 2000 16:40:51 +0000 From: "Michael L. Until we have a new beta you can do what Clarence mentioned before: >From a prior arachne version, with your working graphic adapter, copy file ARACHNE.PCK (saved video mode) to 1.60b1. Don't run SETUP.BAT, because it overrides ARACHNE.PCK !! This way I've got my ET4000 running at 800*600*256 and 1024*768*256. Have fun Guenter Bietzig, Essen, Germany.
