Hi Thomas (and Sam),

First the good news: PKTXCODE is available in english, the address
of Ulrich Mueller is (or at least has been):
----------------------------------------------------------------------
PktXCode v1.23g

6.2 Bezugsquellen fr neue Versionen (where to look for new
versions - but in the documentation he states that he won't
develop it any further except for fixing bugs):

Magic "PKTXCODE" fr die aktuelle (deutschsprachige) Version,
*Magic "PKTX-ENG" fr die aktuelle englischsprachige Version.*

His decoder requires machines with at least these specifications:
----------------------------------------------------------------------
6.1 Systemanforderungen
--------------------------------------------------------------------
PktXCode bentigt die folgenden Systemvoraussetzungen:
- DOS ab 3.3 oder OS/2 ab 3.0
- ca. 500 kb freien Arbeitsspeicher (RAM)
- sechs freie Dateihandles (vgl. "FILES="-Eintrag in der CONFIG.SYS)
- 80286-kompatibler Prozessor fr die DOS-Version,
80386-kompatibler Prozessor fr die OS/2-Version
Empfohlen (recommended):
- schnelle Festplatte (fast HDD)
- groer (Software-) Cache fr die Festplatte (1 MB oder grer)
- mehrere MB freier Speicher (DOS: XMS-Speicher)
----------------------------------------------------------------------
OK, now for the bad news: It can't do everything, that is separating
MIME messages into their separate parts and show them in the correct
way. But it can find the encoded parts of a file attachment by
itself and automate the process of decoding it and building up a
database with all decoded file attachments you ever got (in case your
newsreader isn't able to do this by himself).
It detects the following methods of encoding files and can decode
them without further help and make one file even from divided mails
due to the oversized length of the attachment (at least that's what
Ulrich says):
----------------------------------------------------------------------
1. Einleitung - Wofr braucht man PktXCode? (Why PktXCode?)
--------------------------------------------------------------------
[...]
PktXCode...
- dekodiert Dateien im UUENCODE, XXENCODE, BASE64 und BINHEX-Format
(self-explaining...)
- erkennt zusammengehrige Nachrichten unabhngig von ihrer
Reihenfolge anhand vom Betreff, UUENCODE-Splitzeilen oder Markie-
rungen gem Fido-FSC-0047 Definition
(order of separate parts doesn't matter because of its ability to recognize
the correct sequence with these methods)
- erkennt, ob alle Teile einer Datei vorhanden sind, die auf mehrere
Nachrichten verteilt sind
(checks the completeness of a file when divided into several parts)
- speichert Teile von unvollstndigen Dateien in einer Datenbank
(stores parts of incomplete files in a database)
- stellt umfangreiche Funktionen zur Wartung der Datenbank zur
Verfgung
(many functions to maintain that database)
[...]
Und noch eines:
PktXCode ist F R E E W A R E !
