Subject: Why aren't GIFs displaying?
Instead of displaying GIFs I'm getting red boxes. What is wrong?
Here is my ARACHNE and MIME CFGs if someone might see what is wrong for me.
ARACHNE.CFG
;This is ARACHNE.CFG for Arachne version 1.50 SRC
;If you want to use Arachne on PC with CPU 486+ you should start here.
;(tested on AMD K5/133)
;This configuration file can be completely controled from Arachne setup.
;Run "setup" if you are not sure what to change in configuration file.

Here's my MIME.CFG
;--------------------------------------------------------------------------
;Arachne understands four basic file types: HTM, GIF, BMP, TXT and ASF.
Only
;GIF and BMP can be inlined using <IMG> tag. If the file has different
;extension than one those and if in the following conversion table no
;corresponding action is defined, Arachne offers moving of downloaded file
;from CACHE directory (or of local file) to DOWNLOAD directory.
;ASF files are treated as script files (simply lists of URLs).
;For conversion to supported format is used macro "ext1>ext2|command",
;for calling external viewer macro "extension|command". See syntax rules
;(at the end of this file.)

And the problem is exactly what?
We only change the start year from 1970 to 2038 (or whatever it is) if the
year reported is less than 29 (for a program made after 1999 of course -
this will change as the years passes by...)
IMO "32 bits is enough for anyone" ;-)
There are other problems, which will require a complete rewrite of the
standards, SQL for instance stores the year like a string (something like
"2000-02-08") and therefor has a Y10K bug.
But I doubt anyone will use any SQL database I create now after 8 000 years ;)

Arachne doesn't use the TMP setting (can someone inform me of a program
that does?)
ARACHNETEMP and then TEMP is used.

Because this is the place where they are *always* stored (and if you
install an APM you'll notice an apm.log file as well). This is one of the
reasons that you shoudl use a HD caching utility (and all the other small
files, mime.cfg and arachne.cfg for instance, that are constantly reloaded).

Well... Hotmail.com has been modified to work with
WINDOWS-ONLY web browsers (requires Security
certificates, which are available only on MSIE 4.0 or
later (my copy of MSIE 3.0 doesn't work with it) and
probabily with later versions of netscape... also
requires https capabilities (secure http transfers,
which involves encription and some other 'security'
trashes...) instead of hotmail you can use yahoo mail
(mail.yahoo.com) or crosswinds
(www.crosswinds.com...:)) which are good and better
than hotmail and you can use all in arachne :)
Have a nice day :)

Hmmm...
TMP variable setting is used with win98 or later to
make an alternate location for temporary files...
(when you have a hard disk with partitions... for
example or (like me) you don't have a hard disk, but
many conections of net units...)
Arachnetemp system variable works nice if you have it
directed in a directory which is in the arachne
directory... ex: if you have core.exe in a c:\arachne\
directory arachnetemp may be... c:\arachne\temp\
without the final '\' if you aren't in a LAN
enviroment)
A little bug...
when you use arachne in LAN enviroment (for beginers
lan stands for Local Area Networks) usually arachne
doesn't detect the config.sys or autoexec.bat files...
(do you have seen boot up a computer from a net unit?
:) ) This can be corrected... (arachne stops in it
and you have to enter manually the Setup.htm command
in the url line to continue the process :)
Have a nice day...

'Console mode' _IS_ DOS !!!
And Win9x is a GUI just like Win 3.1x !

This is not usefull IMHO.
Almost all programms use some Win features, and so they can't run with that
program. (I have forgotten it's name ...)

The files are used for temporary storage of composed mail and when you
fill in text areas on web pages. If you use an external editor the file
is saved as a TMP until your done composing your mewssage. If you fill in
a text box on a web page I've noticed that the text is also saved in a
TMP file. You can delete them but they come back whenever you compose
some text.
I've found them quite useful. I use them when I send similar messages to
a lot of different people. Also I can keep a record of what I enter in
text boxes.

I tested my machine on a variety of dates until I found the year where

Here are a couple of guesses: (Did you already use google with the type
numbers?)
1. If the com port is found without previously starting windows, it appears
to be a hard com port (good). Try msd or similar system info app. to find
out the type of UART used (should be 6550 or similar)
2. check port speed: try 57600 instead of 115200.
3. try jumpering the thing to com3, if your multi io chard (harddisk
controller) already has 2 com ports (windows may overrule one, while dos
doesn't.
IMHO setting to com3 should work.

A DOS .pdf viewer is available from
http://info.apnpc.com.au/swlib/Applications/Word_Processing/0005L0.html
and also from
http://cosmic.rrz.uni-hamburg.de/webdoc/viewer/acroread/

So... did you then restore your "back-up" copy???
What's that you say???
You didn't make a back-up copy _first_???
Shame on you..... Bad beta testing procedure.<vbg>
But seriously, I've yet to try the "new" hotlist manager.
I'll try it and see if the same thing happens to mine.
One question just occured to me.
Did you start with the "fresh" hot list included in v1.60b1?
Or was it a the "old" one copied-over from a previous version?
I'll try it both ways.

Unfortunately, AcroDos will not work with the new format of .PDF files.
For now, the only way a "pure DOS" user can get the text from a new .PDF
is to send it to [EMAIL PROTECTED] or [EMAIL PROTECTED]
If you'de like it in HTML format, try [EMAIL PROTECTED] or
[EMAIL PROTECTED]
If you already have the .PDF, attach it to an "empty" message and send
it to one of those addresses.
If the .PDF is on the web, place the "complete URL" within the
message body.
You will receive the converted file via return eMail.
