Subject: search in text

Being able to search for text strings within the page being edited by
Arachne is something I've wanted for a long time.

It took awhile for me to get used to using only F7 to do it, so at first
I thought it was *me* making mistakes.

Wasn't me.

Using the built-in editor and the F7 search, it is impossible to search
for multiple occurences of the text string UNLESS YOU DELETE EACH ONE AS
YOU FIND IT.

Since I don't want to delete, but simply want to locate/read/check, F7
always takes me to the same place ... even if I have scrolled all the
way down to the bottom of the piece being edited and even if I've placed
the cursor on the line under the last last line of text ... the search
F7 key goes back to the top of the page being edited and finds only the
first occurence of the string.

You don't believe me, take this message into "reply," get into the text
area so it's active, hit F7 and search for the string 'string' [sans
apostrophes]. Search for the next occurence. Don't hold your breath.

Two out of three ain't so bad. I did not fill out the form as this is
only required for the Arachne distributions, not the APM's or other
supplemental files.

I probably didn't clear the cache nor did I fill out the forms.

You must have been very bad, Clarence. ;)

The first thing in my arachne.pck file is the name of the driver I
use (Trident). I used the viewer in Desktop2 and viewed it in HEX.
You might want to try another HEX viewer/editor, L.D.

Yes, if you delete or rename arachne.pck and start Arachne, it calls
the setup and creates another one after you answer the prompts for
memory, video, etc. I remember somebody once (might have been Boanne)
saying they thought that deleting arachne.pck occasionally helped
there installation run better. This was some several versions ago and
I think this was when we had the Arachne "sleeping" problems. HTH.

Ji, I don't think it would work. I recently had to reinstall Arachne
1.6b1 and I set the cache to a non-existent directory and Arachne
refused to load the packet driver. There is a section in one of the
Options selections to expire cache pages. I am not sure how they work
exactly, but you might want to try one or more of these options and
see if they do what you want to do.

Jack Cotter, All:
Here's the line in my aracdial.bat where I use the epppdd.exe from

(It's all one line, Pegasus E-Mail probably breaks it up)
I have the file output.txt overwritten each time I connect with
Netdial 1.3 - Arachne combo, and this reduces the amount of
output that scrolls down the screen when epppdd is running.
If I want to go look at output.txt, I can, it's in the c:\netdial
directory where epppdd is.
My aracdial.bat file is attached, and so far, it has worked
perfectly with epppdd on this Compaq.

Press "O" , link to "Local settings" scroll toward the bottom of the

I don't know enough about frames to say if this is correct or not.

Edit the cached file and change it to <frameset rows="1,1"

Hello all,
Just a small item in Arachne 1.60b1
Going from Desktop --> Utilities --> Memory Info
gives the mem.dgi file, and at the bottom is the "more details"
button, for file://memc.dgi
When that's pressed, you get memc.dgi and at the bottom of that
page is another "more details" button. Pressing that gives you
memc.dgi again, and so on...
Just a small item that detracts from an otherwise very good
Arachne 1.60b1.
I find the e-mail works very well, and the only problem is
blank web pages such as:
http://www.usatoday.com/news/nfront.htm
caused by javascript on the page that Arachne needs to ignore.

Here's my first Beta version of a PDF "plug-in" for Arachne.

Simply add this line to mime.cfg

file/.pdf |c:\\xpdfdos\\pdftotex.exe $1 $t\pdf.txt \n arachne $t\pdf.txt

 That's it.
We _should_ be able to view PDF files as TXT with Arachne now.

Rebel,

Do you really think I am *that* dumb? BIOS updates are rare things, not
common things. To find a BIOS update available more than 6 months after
the motherboard was released is unusual. If the motherboard has been
replaced by the mfr by a new, improved, bigger better model, there will
be NO further updates of any kind for the old motherboard.

Besides, I don't believe the virus crap sits in the BIOS per se; it is
most likely in the chip set. Chip sets are *not* updated by original
mfr or by motherboard mfr.

The virus stuff you can use CMOS setup to activate can't be much more
than a simplistic set of flags that will set of a warning under certain
circumstances. Simple programs can raise hell with complex new
software; I can imagine what fun it could be to have that CMOS virus
program activated while attempting to install BootMagic or System
Commander. I'll be your worst nightmare would be pleasant in comparison.

Michael Dawley,

This is a continuation - ran out of gas last night!

I don't think the use of EPPPDD is a solution to the problem .
I suspect that there is a timing problem using EPPPD on these machines.
Maybe the "DD" version will serve as a work around until a real solution
can be found.

I ran it with the normal Arachne setup last evening and the packet
driver stayed resident for the first time on that machine using Arachne.
However the redirected output to ppp.log caused Arachne to kack, but the
driver was resident.

I'm in a catch 22 right now with Arachne. The packet driver WILL NOT
stay resident using EPPPD so I can't see what's wrong. It WILL stay
resident with the diagnostic version, but then there is nothing wrong!
Probably have to do a quick learn on DOS standard error.

textarea.tmp for instance need to be there since if Arachne crashes (and
you have the temp directory cleared when booting or on a RAMDrive) you
would loose the things you have written.
I can only assume that's the same with the other files.

I should probably remove the creation of apm.log since the installation of
APMs can't go wrong anymore. (Ok, one thing can go wrong (running out of
space) but I'll get around to that before I remove the log).

It certainly isn't here either. Except at the 13th december when several
women/girls and boys (and a few men) celebrate "Lucia". I take it it's a
rather strange celebration (for you others) since some Nobel prize winners
have been terrified that it's the KKK that has come to get them.

First of all the "$t\" should be "$t" - otherwise it will not work with
older DOS versions.
(BTW: I just noticed that Lineo has several old kernels for download at
http://www.lineo.com/support/archive/drdos/drdos.html)

Ok, I haven't tried this (espacilly since I haven't installed the program
yet) but something like this would perhaps be better since it doesn't make
Arachne start Arachne.

file/.pdf TXT|@c:\\xpdfdos\\pdftotex.exe $1 $2

And if this (or any other idea - including Glenns <g>) works perhaps it can
be a part in upcomming Arachne versions? (the program is under the GPL so
it's doable).

If you can change these pages yourself (or rather the script that makes
them) you can add this little line to them:
<ARACHNE NOCACHE>

BTW: Did other people get something about a confirmation when they read

I don't know where Glenn got that from.

It's easy to find... goto Downloads.

:)

It works beautifully here.

I found the same thing (in Eudora too). A confirmation system has existed
for a long time and it is compatible between mail systems (otherwise Eudora
wouldn't have complied to a request for a receipt from outlook). You can
request for confirmations that the mail has arrived, that it's been read,
or deleted.

Eudora's help index shows me that you can change some settings to require
receipts when you send mail, and what to do when you have a receipt
request. You have to change Eudora's .ini file to find those settings, so
few people care.

The only difference about MS outlook is that you can set this receipt
behaviour in the preferences, so anybody can do it. Maybe it requests for
read confirmation by default (stupid - but then, Outlook opens attachments
by default).

The receipt system is a useful feature when used wisely :-) It used to be
VERY useful when mail systems were dubious, and you had to check your mail
would arrive at its destination by using traceroute and ping and so on. I
use receipts at work, where MS Exchange is the standard :-( and I have to
chase reluctant students by e-mail - I can wave the receipt in front of
their nose and ask them what they are doing about it.

I received a message, apparently from [EMAIL PROTECTED], dated Feb 7, 2000,
routed through Mexico, bilingual Spanish/English, with a base64 attachment
Fix2001.exe, supposed to fix a Win 95/98 Y2K problem, either with the OS or the
Internet software, I couldn't tell which. It was supposed to be run before year
2000, but then why was it not sent until Feb 7, 2000, and why was it Fix2001.exe
and not Fix2000.exe? I queried, got "User unknown" for [EMAIL PROTECTED],
which really made it look suspicious. So I queried techsupport, that went
through, and I got the response that it was not from Bluegrass Net, that I
should not install Fix2001.exe. Who knows, maybe a prank to format my hard
drive: shows where automatically executing an email attachment can be hazardous,
even from what pretends to be a trusted source. Somebody could fake the
identity of your trusted former sysop friends!

I too have the problem of old versions of Web pages coming up, especially
weather reports linked from http://iwin.nws.noaa.gov/iwin/textversion/main.html
To avoid having to press the R(efresh) key every time, only way I have seen so
far is F8 to kill the cache, which I sooner or later have to do anyway when I
get a huge pile of garbage in CACHE directory. But I would like to be able to
Get New, which would download from the http or ftp server, ignoring the cache.
Arachne is not smart enough to know weather reports become outdated several
times a day.

DOS Lynx386 does not have a CACHE directory comparable to Arachne, but writes
TCP/IP debug info to a file which can become huge, unless I direct to NUL.

Bernie,

Do DOS graphic programs get no better than VGA 640 * 480 * 16 colors in NT 4
VDM? OS/2 Warp 4 VDM allows Arachne to run 800 * 600 * 65536 colors just as in
straight DOS. Does anybody know what will happen in Win 2000 regarding running
Arachne in VDM? Or is MS trying to squeeze out legacy OSes, figuring anybody
with any sanity runs the latest MSIE?

What programs are available to check and clean viruses from CMOS?
