Hi Michael,
>>> Brian Murphy: afraid they would be violating the Arachne copyright by
making up a ready to run copy for downloading.<<
<<Michael Polak: They don't have to modify entire package. They can just
rename working ARACHNE.CFG to COMPUSRV.ACF and offer ACF file for download.
Arachne users can easily reconfigure Arachne by opening ACF file in
Arachne.>>
well, that's not exactly what Brian was told. :)
and it's not quite as 'automatic' as that sounds to have
it just 'go' :)
He asked for someone to create a 'will run for
anyone on CompuServe' package for Arachne :) I figure we'll
figure that 'perfect' scenario out about the same time you do
for your auto installer not to mention that none of the members on
CompuServe are paid to do extra work like that.
There is already available on the CompuServe DOS Internet forum
instructions for setting up Arachne with and without the internal
dialer, they didn't work on his PC (sound familiar <g>).
The CompuServe forums will be open for the public to use starting
April 3rd but require Javascript and now they require an HTTPS
login. I don't know how close you are with Arachne to getting
to either of those
Folks can, with just javascript capability, download files and
read messages there, http://go.compuserve.com/inetres
A problem with putting together an ACF file is that the other
things that the setup program does for them sooner or later would
come down to cutting and pasting the Arachne.CFG file and the .ACF
file together and it's not quite as straight forward as it seems
with the number of options that might set for a particular PC.
I haven't had time to work on it but I figure there
would probably be a way with .ASF scriptoing or something or better
to add, in the Options screen the ability to
specify a dial script file to be included on [Save] instead
of needing to type each line.
This is a dial in Arachne script that works for CompuServe in
the U.S.. Of course if you're using Netdial, or Chat.exe, or
Bobcat, or Lynx, or UKA_PPP with Arachne as a helper app, then
you want to use Connection Ready & usually an
IP_Address %MYIP% line and not have this script in
play. It would be nice if Arachne could check to see if there
is already a connection in memory before having trouble
with no PPP LOG entry etc, but that's just a workaround that
sets up in the batch file, creating a clone of the Arachne.cfg
file and starting it with a batch file that changes it based on
what program the user uses to dial.

We have provided copies of Arachne.cfg files to use and dial
batch files etc too and how-to set it up files :)
But basically, there isn't anyway yet to give them an ACF file that
doesn't need to be customized for their situation (ID, Password,
modem port, speed, PC speed, etc).
