Great ... what do you want to do with it.
Arachne calls external programs for its functions.
So you have to get programs which support your card. (and than no driver is
required)
There is a .WAV player included IMHO, which supports SB16.
And you have to insert this variable. (here SB16 works wiht IO220, Int5,
Dma1 and 5, Midi IO330 I don't know what t6 means ...)
SET BLASTER=A220 I5 D1 H5 P330 T6
That's it.

Ok, it does work :) (but it took quite some time for my Free Pascal Users
manual to be transformed - and it's "only" 297K I would probably not like
to run this program on a 386).

That was NOT a good idea. I didn't know how big the program was and 964K is
a little much to add.
An APM download on the other hand seems to be a good idea, I'll get around
to it right away and upload it later today (I wonder when the alarm goes
off at university <g>).
BTW: Should it work on on-line files as well? I guess one can change this
line him/herself then.

application/pdf TXT|@c:\\xpdfdos\\pdftotex.exe $1 $2
Only problem with that is that the files will be in the cache directory
under "weird" names. I'll need to figure out how to make acopy and this
work together.

I'll think I'll respond again...
Whichever version of apm.exe that's in 1.60b1 (my "first 1.50b3 apm.exe"
version according to the source, not so according to mime.cfg) these
problems exist:
1. The name isn't the correct one. (12345678.apm instead of hotlsman.apm -
first fixed in the "newer 1.5b3 apm.exe")
2. The image error.gif has been moved but this hasn't been changed in the
code. You'll see this when you download apm's from my pages - I've even
made a security.apm to get around that (if you manage to install that one
of course). Michael can't I be trusted by default soon? (add
http://bernie.arachne.cz/ to security.cfg)
The sollution is to download my acopy.apm (solves the first problem) or my
(first?) "1.60b2 apm.exe" (this is getting ridiculous - I need to have a
version number on them soon <BG>) (fixes both problems at once).
BTW: xpdf090.apm is now uploaded (and reachable - I forgot to set the
access rights on my apm/ directory earlier). You'll need to download
acopy.apm as well.
Still nothing of all this solves the problem that (IIRC) Clarence had. Can
you get back to me with specifics on:
* Where temp, download, cache and main Arachne directory is
* Free space on this/these drive(s)
* DOS version and any command.com replacment
I did however noticed that leaving "license=" out of an apm.id locks
apm.exe (CTRL-ALT-DEL needed) when installing - this should probably be
handled a little better. I feel a "newer 1.60b2 apm.exe" comming ;-)
Other things I need to change are the error handling, now it says that it
might be an old apm (v1) when:
* unarj.exe is missing (it should IMHO be moved to system\dgi as well)
* the apm file can't be found (only affects off-line usage)
BTW: Michael, the error that comes when downloading a page and clearing the
cache at the same time (I don't know why I did it just that I did) could
probably be delt with in a better way. (Always stopping download first and
then clearing the cache). Or perhaps it's up to the user not to do
something stupid like what I did?

I found this report very interesting, and the reason for this bug is that
Arachne 1.6b1 runs all commands in lower case while fixmem.exe assumes a
big "C" will come. IMO it would be wiser to not switch cases since DOS
isn't case sensitive but programs can be (and in this case is).
Another "bug" is that the file system\apm.db\hcol15rc.htm should be
replaced with a new one.

edit (or any other text-editor) will do perfectly fine. What you probably
need is a tex2dvi utility (and then a dvi2ps). I don't remember where I got
mine from but do a search for "latex dos" at google.com and you should find
it. If you can't I can probably upload the download I did.
>I'm afraid I don't even know what a .tex file is. :(
A .tex file is a LaTeX file (pronounced as "LaTech") you can drop the "La"
if you want on both - I'm not entirely sure on the diffrences. This file is
much like a HTML file since it contains rules on how the test should be
presented. It's not very hard to learn the basics (with almost no info at
all <g>), but several of the things that makes it "look good" also makes it
very hard (atleast for me - even with info) to make it look exactly as I
want it to. For instance the following text needs some tricks to be done in
a .tex file:
I want to continue
here (with two empty lines in between)
The diffrence with a HTML file is that it contains *exact* rules and
therefor it's not worth much as electronic documents (converted to ex. pdf,
ps or dvi) but on paper it looks great (if the printer is any good at all).
It almost makes Word documents look like ASCII (but without the benefits) ;-)
Now if I only can bypass the printing system at uni. (that costs money) and
print free (via the printer port instead of the LAN) I'll gladly download
.pdf or .ps files :)

While Mirabilis didnt, and never will port ICQ to DOS, mICQ,
which is a clone of ICQ for Linux has been ported to DOS.
It is availble only in text-mode and cannot run with other
programs at the same time.. although there are afew tricks availble
to do that, but I never managed to get any of them to work.
mICQ might be included in Arachne in the distant future.
A URL to a site where you can download DOS-mICQ from is:

Hi Christoph
I use a DOS version of ICQ. It is called MICQ. With this program you can
communicate over the Mirabilis channels with all the windozing ICQ people.
You can use the same UIN that you get from Mirabilis. The similarities in
the features and functioning of MICQ to ICQ are remarkable. MICQ works great.
I would recommend it to everyone. You won't find this program at any
Mirabilis site, as it is not supported by Mirabilis. To download a copy of
MICQ, go to John Lewis' site, aka the VE3LGS home page,
http://members.kingston.net/lewis
In order to use MICQ you must first establish an internet connection and load
a packet driver. I use NetDial, by Marc Ressl, and I use also DOS EPPPD.
These programs are also available from the same web-site. Download the
package for the Bobcat/Lynx browser and you wil find in it Netdial and
DOS EPPPD, along with lots of helpful documentation on how these programs
may be used.
There is probably some way to use MICQ as an Arachne plug-in. I haven't
yet tried to conduct any experiments along that line, but I plan to do so
as soon as I get a round tuit.

Few notes: This is the official DOS-mICQ URL.
I forgot to mention how to use it. Generaly you can just connect
with Arachne, quit arachne without hanging-up and then run mICQ.
(dont run the installer or dialer that comes with mICQ, just run
mICQ itself.).
Having a properly configured WATTCP.CFG file is ofcourse always
a good idea.

So future 32bit Linux or DOS version have to be even faster, because
swapping of memory, even to XMS, takes more time than linear memory
allocaiton...

Well, if I change F9 key to just "dump virtual screen", the results will
be same as in Netscape. But F9 is more than just "Refresh" in Netscape; it
should correct even broken virtual screens. In fact, after F9 key, virtual
screens are deallocated, and Arachne refreshes screen in no-virtual
screen mode...
I can add some kind of Alt+F9 which would just dump virtual screen,
and don't refresh GUI or generate virtual screen again.
You were simply comparing two different features, as F9 in Arachne is
currently not comparable to Netscape's View | Refresh function.

My sound blaster is a "real" sound blaster 16 from Creative labs..
and it require DOS drivers for some operations. (Several games

T is the type. (Sorry I odn't know what the diffrent types are - a list
appeared on the SURVPC list a while back).
H is the High DMA channel
P is the midi Port
my settings are:
a220 i7 d1 h5 p330 t6
(I would like to have irq 5 but with that setting Win95 wouldn't work well
with my NIC which tried to install itself on irq 10 - don't ask me why it
didn't work).

But one still needs to know what type it is.
I recomend that one goes to:
http://www.creative.com/support/files/download.asp
and download the things that are needed (luckily I'll need to log off the
Net - otherwise I would probably download a bunch of the utilites from
creative and never use them <g>)

I don't need any drivers but need to run:
C:\SB16\DIAGNOSE /S
C:\SB16\MIXERSET /P /Q
to get it to work all the time (it's a SB16 VE). Buying another real for
the other computer was expensive (2-3 times more money than most cards) a
few years ago.
Actually the only thing I noticed that gave me problems when I left thwese
out was Doom.
(Which is even more fun now since I connected three computers together via
the LAN so I can look ahead (like normal) and 90 degrees to the right and
left while playing - you can't do that with Quake III now can you ;-) )
Or, are these the "drivers" you are refering to or is there something I've
missed?

Hmmm. I thought that was why I included that. But you are right.
The system was upgraded to MS-DOS 6.20.

Hi Mike;
Initially Qemm 4.23.
Then tested with Qemm 5.12 and above test with Qemm 8.01.
QDPMI is NOT loaded as I have never needed it for anything before.
I think I want to keep it that way.<G>
I see no mention of special DPMI services in the docs I have for Himem and
emm386. I thought ALL memory managers used protected mode anyway.
Are you by any chance running a DOS extender like DOS4GW.exe ?
Maybe this thing needs to run in 32bit mode. :-((
