Hi Ricsi, Clarence,
RM>CV> Is everyone using DOS in a Window box ??
RM>No ... but very many people have cwsdpmi in their path !
I've discovered why the xpdf utilities run for me...
I found cwsdpmi in my \Arachne directory, which is in my path.
I can't find it in the 1.61 zip file so I can only guess that
it came along with the QV APM (the only APM I have installed).

I got 2 EMails and 22 Arachne Mailinglist Mails.
6 were duplicates and were automatically deleted.
(First I thought that my software has gone nuts, but I looked through the

I copied all fonts into the main gs directory ... this is also a possibility,
but not as cool as yours :))

Great thanks ... but -q does not seem to work here.
I have to enter quit at the end to exit the program.
And the default display is very small. I can't really read the content.
Do you know a way, that bigger characters are used ??
(Maybe display only half a page at once)
THANKS very much !!!

Roger,
How come no-one before mentioned trouble loading on p75 or 586/133 before?
What OS are you using?
Steve,
Have you tried checking "use bootp" in the external dialer setup yet?
(I got a load error due to insufficient memory with 1.60, bootp was the
solution)
(if the package driver loads, modem and port settings must be good)

sugestions... well, some questions to start with:
0. what diagnostic program are you using?
1. how many com ports are there when you take the modem out, and what are
there addresses and uart versions? Are those ports on the main board or on
a controller card?
2. idem when you put the modem back in.
3. what after booting from a dos diskette?
(if you have ms-dos 5 or 6.x, just put himem.sys, emm386.exe and msd.exe on
the floppy and write some config.sys)
4. Do you have a manual with jumper settings, or is there a table with the
settings printed on the modem (use a looking glass if necessary)?

Subject: .PDF from m$-word apparantly sucks
Hello all,
Spectacular achievements on the .pdf plugin front...
Just arjive the stuff to .apm and done.
Yet this modem manual from dynalink.com gives some garbage characters in
the header (both from [EMAIL PROTECTED] as for the dos pdftotxt program).
This may be because it's some output of an m$-word converter.
The large size (half a meg) of the files is no problem.
Although the rest of the .txt output is readable, arachne won't show it
because the header (or the first part of the file, wich contains a graphic
logo that may not be separated from the rest of the file due to
non-standard m$ conversion) appears to contain something that arachne won't
swallow.

Subject: Happy Birthday...
To: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
One weekend in November 1989, I wrote a mail program. It was a very
little mail program - it didn't do anything fancy, but it filled a
niche. Originally, the program was called "ComNet Mail" - for those of
you who are interested in trivial history, this is the origin of the
extension .CNM for a particular type of file.
On the basis that it might have been useful to other people as well, I
tidied it up a bit, and at some point in February 1990, made it
available on the Internet. I can't remember the exact date I released
it, but the first mail message I have about a program called Pegasus
Mail is dated February 15th 1990... So, February 15th it is.
Now, far beyond any expectation I ever had, Pegasus Mail is
celebrating its tenth birthday. Ten years... Gee; it seems like an
eternity in this industry. Not many software packages last that long -
usually something happens to kill them off long before then; but the
wings are still flapping on this one.
It's all quite emotional, really. As I write this message, I'm sipping
a glass of bubbly and thinking of you all: thank you all for your
support, your interest, your feedback and your friendship over the
last ten years; I hope you'll keep me company as we explore the next
ten.
Cheers!

Hello Glenn, all,
Here's what I have in the "stock" Mine.cfg file:
- ------------------------------------------------------------------
[MIME]
text/html HTM
text/plain TXT
image/gif GIF
image/jpeg JPG>BMP|$edjpeg.exe -bmp -colors 256 $1 $2
audio/x-wav WAV|$eplany.exe $1
audio/basic AU|$eplany.exe $1
;
- -------------------------------------------------------------------------=
- --------
As it is now, I can play .wav files I encounter on the=20
internet, using Arachne's built in plany.exe.
Glenn has:
- -------------------------------------------------------------------------=
- ----------
audio/midi MID|d:\\audio\\cndmidi\\cndmidi.exe $1
audio/x-midi MID|d:\\audio\\cndmidi\\cndmidi.exe $1
;not enabled by default:

file/.mpe |@call C:\\1batch\\arampeg.bat $1
file/.avi |@call C:\\1batch\\araavi.bat $1
file/.mov |@call C:\\1batch\\aramov.bat $1

file/.s3m |@d:\\audio\\mod\\cp.EXE $1
file/.mod |@d:\\audio\\mod\\cp.EXE $1
- -------------------------------------------------------------------------=
- ----------------------------------------
If I just copy what Glenn has into my mime.cfg file what will happen?
I will need the file cndmidi.exe, and would need to place it in my =
c:\sounds
directory, then the first two lines of Glenn's mime.cfg above would be:
- -------------------------------------------------------------------------=
- ---------------------------
audio/midi MID|c:\\sounds\\cndmidi\\cndmidi.exe $1
audio/x-midi MID|c:\\sounds\\cndmidi\\cndmidi.exe $1
- -------------------------------------------------------------------------=
- ---------------------------
This assumes that I make a sub-directory c:\sounds\cndmidi which will
have cndmidi.exe there.=20
Also, Glenn has the line:
file/.mid |d:\\audio\\cndmidi\\cndmidi.exe $1
Which I would change to:
file/.mid |c:\\sounds\\cndmidi\\cndmidi.exe $1
If I am only interested in adding midi to Arachne, then are those three =
lines
is all I would need? (In addition to obtaining cndmidi.exe)
By adding midi to Arachne, I then would be able to visit a .wav and .mid =
site,
and play both kinds of files as easily as I now can play the .wav files =
using
the stock Arachne-plany.exe setup.

I have a SB16. I am also seriously into MIDIs, as a sequencer (see my
web site).
I have play.exe and will happily zip and send on request. You will need
the other bits and pieces tho', from Creative, to set the card to fire under
DOS and Windows. I can invoke it from Arachne, just by editing mime.cfg as
suggested by others.
For those that have forgotten, there is also a MIDI player APM for
download (from John P Tomany). Unfortunately for me, it needs more memory than
I can spare, but it should be OK for those without as much overhead as me.
That is the "cndmidi" that was refered to in another post.
But unless you have a daughter MIDI card inserted into your SB16, the
MIDIs will sound pretty artificial. Regrettable, for most of us impoverished
musician types, at least Win 3.1 is needed to get any real pleasure from
MIDIs, the Windows MIDI mapper/patches are what makes the difference for me.
And, YES Bernie, there is a Karioki player for Win 3.1 and 95/98. A GOOD
one, actually, that doesn't need the _HUGE_ GUS patches. It is called:
SJGPlay for Windows. Comes as both 16 and 32 bit versions from Steve J Gray,
[EMAIL PROTECTED] , and downloadable from his site at:
http://www.ryerson.ca/~sgray along with a lot of other stuff he has written.
The version of SJGPlay that I have - v0.46 - is beta and FREEWARE. I have not
checked out if there are any newer versions recently. It will play MIDI,
Karioki, and most other multimedia files for which you have windows drivers
installed, e.g. AVI, MOV, QT, MPEG, FLI etc.. and supports play lists.
And talk about configurable !!!! You may gather it is one of my all-time
favourite Windows programs.
Note: The SJGPlayer for DOS is just a CD player, also freeware. This can
be called from within Arachne using an .OOK. I have a whole .HTM page
(actually the default Home Page) from which I call most of my DOS applications
(via .OOK) and even Windows 3.1 - isn't Arachne a versatile thing !

Let's blame Linux. (On the Arachne server)

You are right, it clears it up - but ONLY a little.
You had posted that it still worked after you changed your path
to EXCLUDE cwsdpmi.exe.
??
And anyway, the obscure point I've been trying to make is, some stuff works
for some people because they accidentally have the support crap that the
author forgot to mention was required. (Or in some cases, maybe the author
doesn't KNOW his program won't run on EVERBODYs hardrive.)

Hi Mike;
I downloaded QV about a year ago. I've just checked ALL my drives
for cwsdpmi* and found nothing.

Subject: Need Help?
Hey All,
I'm new at this, and I need your help. I have been reading this list for
awhile, hoping to learn. Well, anyway. I have a computer given to me, but
the drive has been formatted. I need to know how I can get into it to
install DOS or some other variation. I want to put Arachne on it and I need
to get it to a prompt. It has a Conner Drive, the model number is CSF425A.
Thanks in advance.
