Clarence,
When I boot the computer up it comes up to an error message saying missing
operating system. I don't know if this is from the drive just being blank
or something else. As far as access to DOS disks, the only thing I can get
is upgrade DOS disks. Will that work if I can get it to a C: prompt?

Gee, thanks. That really raised the general level of content here on
the list.

Hello Ricsi, Glenn, all:
Using @ as per above, now when the player is exited, I return to
arachne with a normal screen, ready to play another midi<g>
My mime.cfg is attached.
Question: Will this mime.cfg be retained when upgrading to b2?
I'll bet it will be, but just wanted to make sure<g>.
Thanks to Glenn for his timely assistance with Mime.cfg.
As for the quality of midi's played with a SB 16 card:
The midi's offered at
http://homepages.valylink.net.au/~ausreg/music.html
are quite good and sound ok on a SB 16.
Also, as long as Arachne has that page and the midi files
in cache, no connection to the internet is necessary to play them
again. Hard to do that in Netscape<g>.
Thanks,
Michael L. Dawley

Bernie,
Thanks. I got play.exe working correctly with Arachne.
Posted my mime.cfg file in another post to show how.
Thanks for your help. Now, anytime I need a little midi
music, I can get it using Arachne<g>.

Mark,
Normaly Telnet is used to log into a distant server, like a Unix
server to read email. Usually, these servers have Pine to read email.
You don't say, but are you using Pine? Telnet is usually just a vehicle
to get to the destination.

The best source of information I know of about TELNET and how it may be
used for working with email may be found here:
http://stud1.tuwien.ac.at/~e8926506/siberia.htm
Some ISPs, mine for example, do not allow subscribers to use TELNET to
get into their email and do anything with it. I have been so informed
by the technical support people. My former ISP did allow TELNET access
to email and I was successful in using the Telnet program that was
provided as an APM for Arachne version 1.42b.

Hello Arachnids:
I'm sorry if my question about AOL Instant Messenger offended anyone. I
really don't know what it is. I thought it might be some kind of chat
program similar to ICQ. If this is indeed the case, then my question is
not at all off-topic, as many of us do use some kind of IRC program with
Arachne. If someone would just please explain to me what kind of program
or service AOL Instant Messenger is, I would appreciate it.

Hello Brian:
If the hard drive really has nothing on it (i.e. not formatted with an
active partition present and not having any system files installed) and
you have no system disk in a floppy disk inserted in drive A: prior to
turning on the machine, then this is a normal error message. You must
install an operating system either on the hard drive or the floppy drive.
Also, you must insure that your CMOS settings are set up so as to specify
the boot order. (i.e. The computer is to search for an operating system in
A:, then C:, or C:, then A:, or whatever, according to your preferences.)
I suggest that you look into your DOS manual and read about the commands
FDISK.COM and FORMAT.COM. It is difficult for some people to understand
how to use FDISK.COM just from reading the manual. I myself used to have
trouble with this one. See if you can find some knowledgeable person who
can help you by demonstrating to you the use of this command on an actual
system. Once you learn how to use it, it's easy. You won't forget. It's
like learning to ride a bicycle.
Sam Heywood
P.S. BTW, make sure that your DOS version and your BIOS is capable of
recognizing a hard drive partition up to the size you specify in FDISK.
For example, DOS version 3.30 cannot recognize hard drive partitions
larger than 32 megabytes.

Yes I do have a good DOS MIDi player for Sound Blaster. It;'s called
PLAYMIDI.EXE and needs to be run by PLAYMIDI.BAT because it loads a
driver before it plays and unloads the driver afterwards. You only
have to edit your MIME.CFG to allopw it to play for Arachne. It works
fine for me. I'd be glad to ZIP it to you, just let me know. I have a

Howdy Glenn,
It was I, not Dale, who originally posted the question about AOL Instant
Messenger. Thanks for your reply. I checked out the URL. There is also
a Windows CE version of AIM, and it works. My son has installed the CE
version of AIM on his handheld computer. The Windows CE version of ICQ is
very buggy according to my son and his friends. They tried it and had
problems with it. It seems that the CE version of ICQ doesn't like
dynamically assigned IP numbers. I can't personally check it out myself
because my son lives very far from me. Anyone having information on this,
please respond privately, as the subject of Windows CE programs is way
off-topic.
>From what I understand, AIM is just a program developed by AOL to compete
with ICQ. It appears that AIM does just the same kind of thing as ICQ.
A very fine DOS version of ICQ (called MICQ by its author) has been
developed. I use it and it works great. Since we now have a DOS clone
for ICQ, it would of course seem theoretically possible to write a similar
DOS program for AIM. I sure would like to have such a program.

Bart,
I did find the note on BOOTP after all in the Arachne.cfg. I tried it with
setting IP_Address BOOTP instead of PPP, but it didn't make any noticable
difference. Freewwweb ISP still won't go to the start page (any start page)
after connecting. Compuserve ISP starts loading the start page, then stalls
before finishing --OR even if I stop it, any attempt to go to another URL
ends up with the "Arachne load error".
I also tried restarting with a bare-bones config.sys and without any
autoexec.bat, hoping to rule out any memory issues. I do have the drive
compressed --do you suppose that might be the problem?

Again, thanks everyone for your suggestions. Here are my disappointed
results so far. I have re-copied my original message below in case somebody
gets another inspiration.
Roger,
I tried it with logo animation off -- no improvement.
Clarence,
I trimmed the config.sys down to almost nothing and started without any
autoexec.bat, hoping to rule out any memory issue or utility conflicts. It
didn't make any apparent difference in Arachne performance or page download

Sergei,
I will try to get proxy server name/addresses from both Freewwweb and
Compuserve ISPs. But I still wonder why another Freewwweb user in my local
area can surf with Arachne via Freewwweb with no HTTPproxy setting.

I've been trying for months, off and on, to get past "Arachne load error".
I seem to have gotten further than many new Arachne users. For now, it is
version 1.50 (had the same trouble with version 1.49). Let me know if you
think 1.60 has any real chance of faring better.
I've tried it on two machines --one a 386 with 2 megs of RAM and the other a
486 with 8 megs RAM -- same symptoms on both. Using MS-DOS 6.22, no EMS,
DOS loaded high. Before starting Arachne MEM shows 697k of conventional
memory free and 6.9 MB XMS free. I have tried to configure it as simply as
possible. Modem is a US Robotics internal set to port 1, irq 4. I tried
setting slower speeds. I have tried substituting the actual port address in
the Arachne.cfg, but it makes no difference --connection is usually
successful anyway. I am using everything as the Arachne installation set up
automatically.
I have a Compuserve account and a Freewwweb account. I can connect to both.
After dialing, it returns "Installed packet driver handler at vector 0x60".
Then it tries to locate the start page. I have verified that both
Compuserve and Freewweb are assigning a new IP. On exit from Arachne, the
Arachne system variables all show values (MYIP, REMIP, NETMASK, PEERMRU --
though Freewwweb assigns 0.0.0.0 to NETMASK). I have been careful to clear
the cache (F8) and either reboot or SET MYIP= before each redial while
testing. MYIP always shows a new value.
With Compuserve it is more successful. Arachne starts downloading the
assigned start page. Sometimes it will finish. Usually it stalls, while
the X-I logo keeps animating the lightning pattern. After a long wait, I
will try pressing R to refresh, or G to enter another URL and the status
line will change to "Connecting to home.arachne.cz [or whatever URL], port
80", stalled again with the X-I logo showing the multicolored spiral
animation. Then I will try pressing G again for another URL. Status line
changes to "Asking for domain name server for [whatever URL]" and the X-I
logo animates the blue/green square pattern. Finally it times out, reads
"Cannot locate computer [URL]" and goes to the Arachne Load Error screen
"Cannot open connection/ Arachne was unable to load requested URL/ Possible
reasons:" and none of the reasons or Arachne documentation is much help.
But even if the start page finishes loading, any attempt to hyperlink or go
to a new URL just stalls again in the same way.
With Freewwweb, it dials, connects, "Installed packet driver . . ." and
assigns IP. Then the status line reads "Asking domain name server for
[start URL --doesn't matter which one I try]". Finally it times out, status
"Cannot locate computer [URL] and goes to the same Arachne Load Error page.
I have tried lengthening the time out, but it doesn't seem to matter. I
have tried substituting an Arachne.cfg used successfully by another
Freewwweb subscriber in my local Los Angeles metro area, but I get the very
same symptoms.
Before I post copy of my own Arachne.cfg or other details, I am hoping that
one of you expert Arachnites will recognize these symptoms. Looks like a
great program, and a perfect way to salvage several cast off DOS machines .
. . if only I could get it to surf beyond the start page. And I was hoping
to give up Compuserve in favor of Freewwweb. I have searched every Arachne
help file and various installation notes posted on Compuserve forums and
other web sites. I have lurked this mail list for some time hoping to spy
some clue. Are Arachne-Digest discussions archived anywhere?

DOS-mICQ was based on the source-code of the mICQ ICQ clone for Linux,
which was open-source. So if somewhere someone have actually written
an open-source Linux clone for the AIM, or if anyone is bored enough
to sit down and monitor the transmittions of AIM to see what makes it
tick.. what can I say, have fun.
BTW
Speaking of which, anyone has by any chance the kernel config make-files
for SuSe Linux 6.0? I seem to have lost them. (make config, menuconfig
or xconfig didnt do anything. File search for these 3 files with
Midnight Commander said they're missing.)
Please answer to me directly since this is OT for the list..
