I don't know the details of how it works, but Pine (Program for
Internet News and Email) can read mail and news interchangably
and with the same interface. 

Newsgroups are treated just like mail folders. You get a numbered
index and can select, read, quote, forward, reply. You can specify
any newsgroup that is carried by your server.

It's very simple to use, but much less simple to install and
configure.
