...NO..!!!
...I'm am seriously sorry, but I cannot agree with you....
I've been hearing much the same thing since I began using Arachne...and
not, on the Chat, a guy came on and griped that Arachne needed Javajunk,
etc, etc,...
...And what you are saying is the same....more bloat......and I don't
buy it...sorry...that is why I use DOS primarily (NOT exclusively) and
Arachne primarily (NOT exclusively)...
...the "problems" you denote - memory, red boxes, javajunk, https...are
already being discussed on this list....
..MEMORY....this is not a problem....except that most DOS will not read
and access more than 16Mbyte, and programs get ONLY 640Kbytes to run in.
32-bit Operating Systems, such as OS/2, CAN (although NT does NOT) give
DOS programs access to the "flat" memory model, and give them a
seemingly unlimited amount of memory...BUT it is the nature of DOS to
be limited unless this is done....you accept this limitation, or you
move to another OS...those are your options.....
....the Linux version may, or may not, have memory problems...those will
be the problems inherent in another OS, and will be dealt with within
the parameters of THAT system...LINUX Arachne may (not necessarily WILL)
be given access to the flat memory model...but that will be up to the
system, and Michael..)personally, I hope he doesn't do something stupid,
such as try to design Linux Arachne to run under "X"...but...)
..RED BOXES....you may not agree, but "red" boxes are a heck of a lot
better than "empty" boxes, as if the .gif didn't even download...as
McCorkle has pointed out, Arachne does us a favor by painting these
erroneously labelled picts as "red" ....this is not a "bug" but is
truely a "feature"...but, you are free to view it as a bug...
....as Glenn has further pointed out, and Bernie, to add a bunch of code
to convert-unconvert-etc will further bloat Arachne...MAYBE, something
can be arranged so that these erroneous picts are ID'ed and renamed to
their correct extension, THEN dealt with by Arachne's NORMAL conversion
routines...BUT...the NOT way to go, is to add more bloat to Arachne..
..JAVAJUNK...this stuff is so ridiculous, and the concept behind it is
so falacious, that I don't even wanna discuss it...I do have to use it,
and put up with it, on a limited number of sites (which I visit as
infrequently as possible) and whenever one of my Blowzzers must fireup
the javajunk engine, "starting JavaScript" is the dreaded, lingeringggg
notice that "the wait is on"....while the bloat-in is cranked up to give
the site requiring it the opening/opportunity to invade my machine, and
blitz it....am I paranoid..?...YOU BET....!!!
..FINISH FIRST....nonsense..!!!...this thing (i.e. Arachne DOS) will
NEVER be finished...and there would never have been any additional
ports/versions of any of the popular software, if their authors had
"finished the first one, first"....what is needed on Arachne DOS, is
for US, the users to keep on learning to improve our use of this model
and maybe integrate useful add-ons, such as XPDF2TXT, and DGST2CNM and
others...
I have been blunt, here, but not harsh or brutal...and I recognise your
right to say what you have been saying, but this needed to be said, too.
No one has been emphatically stating this viewpoint...so I have...and
you can dismiss this as coming from a somewhat ineffectual newbie to
this list, but I don't dismiss YOUR opinion as "ossified output" from
the senile-oldies on the list.

........gregy
