One would want to use www e-mail access for any number of rather
obvious reasons --

to have e-mail at all if broadband provider doesn't have mail server
to have a backup if ISP mail server goes down
to enable more than one account on more than one server
to have an additional layer of protection/anonymnity
to have access to e-mail send/receive when not on primary computer
  " " " " " " " when your computer crashes
  " " " " " " " when anywhere in world

... and last, but not least, by CC'ing yourself at alternate mail
server you can archive mail sent on computer other than your own.

Some free e-mail services offer/include POP3 service, also sometimes SMTP. If
ISP mail server goes down, mail will be temporarily inaccessible even with a
WWW-based service. Not only mail servers but news servers and WWW sites can go
down. But it is nice to have at least a second email account, one that can be
kept even if moving to another ISP as one may have to do when moving
geographically, one that can be accessed when on a computer away from home. But
I don't know any good way of getting news when one's provider has no news
server.

I try to keep lines to width 80. Allowing for somebody else to push my lines to
the right when quoting is no longer my responsibility.
