Hi Thomas,
<<"Thomas Mueller": What good software is there for Usenet? >>
Well, I keep hoping I can answer that with Arachne, but...
NetTamer was on a good track for this until the author stopped
fixing bugs (i.e. changes upper and lower case, doesn't provide
correct headers for threading when replying, can't post to
newsgroups with long names, even though you can receive them).
YARN under UKA_PPP works okay but is a bit slow and there is
a Usenet reader that you can add to KA9Q/YAN but it can be
a bit tricky to figure out.
At one point there were a couple of folks (Mark Ray)
on the list who were working on integrating an external
NNTP program (Martin Goebbel's Newsman)
into Arachne (Michael has (had?) some of the Usenet 'hooks' and
code in Arachne) but I think it sort of died out when we
expected Arachne to implement it from the 'changes' file info
or to at least provide a little bit more to be able to get
the news supported under Insight with the NewsMan "plug-in".
I follow around 200 s/w support newsgroups for various reasons,
some require NNTP server login and NetTamer supports that while
others don't, but then I hit the long newsgroup name issue there :)
I haven't looked for awhile to see what's out there for
DOS newsreaders and have sort of resigned myself to
using Virtual Access or Outlook Express or Agent, etc
(had to get a newer PC to do it though <g>).
Bob Buckland ?:-)
