Sorry I took so long to answer this.
No, 1.61 does not use less than previous - it uses slightly more.
It does manage better. The "tables eat memory" bug is mostly gone.
What I meant in my original post is that we should try to fix your
memory problem and THEN load 1.61. You really should have no trouble
getting enough low memory for Arachne. I can get enough even when
using DOS 6.2 and Himem.sys - both of which are pigs for memory. ;-)
Send me a copy of your config.sys and autoexec.bat and MEM /C >MEM.txt.
