I agree with Or that ESC should STOP/TERMINATE/INTERRUPT whatever is 
happening.  (You want to ESCape from whatever is happening.)  I use ESC to 
stop loading a page that is not the page that I expected or that is taking 
too long to download.  I also use ESC to exit.  Unfortunately, sometimes when 
I want to terminate a download, Arachne exits when I hit ESC.  <ALT-x> is a 
convenient key combination to exit as it only requires two fingers on one 
hand, but, ESC only requires one finger (or a nose).

Alternately, the old default for getting a computer's attention, <CTRL-C>, 
should also be a way to stop the operation.
