there are no extensions in linux ....
there are filenames ... and a '.' is a legal character for a filename.
So you can call it clarence.................no.ext.ens..io.n
and it will be a legal filename :)

there should be help with f1 (esc-1 if you telnet into the machine)
I'm not sure ... but * means imho executable
and @means symlink ('alias' for a file or directory)
