Like l.d. I would look to simple causes for these symptoms. I had the
same thing happen yesterday when setting up an "internet cafe" computer.
(yes, and when at the end of the earth tourists try to email back to
civilisation they will have to use Arachne!) It turned out to be simply
that I had not loaded an extended memory manager! (mixed up config.sys
files - my plan is to have the machine only startable from a 360Kb boot
disk which people have to rent by the hour...heh! heh! heh!) Hardware
firewall? Maybe I could get more extreme and install one of my partners
8" floppy drives!
More seriously though, it sounds to me living in grungeville that you
have dirty SIMMS sockets, or perhaps an " unsettled" internal modem doing
things unilaterally. I had no end of hell with one machine with a 14Kb
Dynalink which caused random reboots.
