Can you switch to another console while running Arachne?
I don't get the screen back and have a ATI Rage IIe (IIRC). I think this
fault is from either the VESA drivers or from the ATI Rage II cards since
switching the card back into text mode don't fix it (which isn't done by
the official Arachne release). I've tried with the latest SVGAlib versions
(1.4.2 and 1.9.5) but it hasn't worked (actually I can't get 1.9.5 to work
at all - it complains about /dev/svga all the time...)
You can perhaps try 1.4.2 as well, especially these two changes are
important for ATI owners (I think):

* workaround for double clock speed in some ATI Rage cards.
* some fixes to rage driver (for 24 bit modes)
