Kinda like a dump where dumpsters go? They are "Public Amenity Tips",
with a line of large skips fed from a raised loading platform. Members
of the public drive in with large items not normally taken by the trash
wagon, plus garden waste etc. Usually there's a dickensian fellow who
sorts the recyclable stuff, and may know how to tell magnesium from
aluminum castings. If you arrive looking for 11/16-inch tubing instead
of 3/4-inch this guy will argue with you until you give him "a few bob"
in desparation.

The tip is _the_ place to be! Apart from garden waste, you get all the
good cr*p before it's diluted with disposable diapers etc. City-dwellers
probably find skips and trash cans more profitable.
