 You're absolutly correct.. that's what *should* happen.<g>
The strange thing is...
That's not what *does* happen at http://www.modarchive.com/search.shtml

"after sunset" is changed to "after%20sunset" (just as expected)
Result... no matches. (not what we would expect)<g>

Now if we change the %20 to + in the URL line....
Result... Found 244 hits: Displaying 100 most relevant hits.

 Just to check that it wasn't requiring both words.
I searched for "viz".
Result... no matches.

Then I tried "forceten"
Result... Found 2 hits: Displaying 2 most relevant hits.

Next I tried "forceten viz" and changed the resulting "forceten%20viz" to
"forceten+viz"
Result... Found 2 hits: Displaying 2 most relevant hits.

IMO, we do not have a problem in Arachne.
The problem seems to be in the CGI at http://www.modarchive.com/search.shtml
