What overhead? DOSED is not accessing the drive when you use the
command prompt and it accesses the disk only when you press the Tab key.
Since DOSED works only at the prompt, the machine is idle while it waits
for you to enter your command. Saving keystrokes saves time and
allows you to issue an instruction faster and with less spelling errors.
Also it has editing features similiar to the Arachne editor
(e.g. Ctrl-left arrow moves the cursor to the previous word, etc)
as well as Wordstar and Emacs (for Linux fans) editing keystrokes
which is much better than the editing features COMMAND.COM gives you.
DOSED uses only 3K of memory (AFAIK,MS DOSKEY uses 5K) and can
be loaded high and it could be uninstalled and could be
temporarily disabled if need be.
It supports the F3 key which displays the last command entered although
you can press the uparrow key to scroll back past commands)
DEFINITELY WORTH IT!!!!!!! :-)
But give it a try and see for yourself, DOSED v5.2 is at
http://shh.thathost.com/ (16K download)
