Hi folks,
last days I found the time for some experiments with my system
configuration and with Arachne. Here is some kind of speech support for
Arachne.
1. You have to load talk.sys driver in Your config.sys file. Since I use
qemm 8.0 I can load it high without crashing my system.
2. Add following line to mime.cfg:
file/speech.dgi |[100]copy _4prt.txt $$talk$$
3. Edit one of the hotkey entries in arachne.cfg as follows:
file://speech.dgi
To make Arachne read the current page, You have to press P to cause A.
to create file _4prt.txt, then hit Your choosen hotkey to invoke
speech.dgi. This method doesn't need additional hardware since the
$talk$ device uses the build in speaker.
Problems: Qualtity of generated speech is very poor.
Arachne crashed after pressing ctrl-break to stop talking.
The speech driver is available from simtel.net as horndrv1.zip or
horndrv2.zip (which includes source code).
List of things to do, IMHO:
- adding a special hotkey to A. which invokes speech
- improving sound quality of talk.sys
Maybe this is of interest for someone.
