Chuck, it is also possible that the loss of width is compression produced
by your card/monitor combination when used in VESA mode. My screen is wider
in straight VGA modes than VESA - probably due to different scan timings.
This seems similar to your comment above, except the difference in width
on my screen is only about 10%.
In other words, the entire screen is there, it is just narrower.
The different resolution you write about is really a difference in the
number of colors available. You will have only 16 colors in that mode.
You can change actual resolutions (640x400 to 1024x768) by hitting the
"+" and "-" keys but only if you are in VESA or HiColor mode.
I have attached a zipped package that will allow you to test all possible
Arachne resolutions that your monitor can support without having to go to
setup. This package will replace "OPTIONS.htm" and both "Arachne.bat" and
"Setup.bat" so maybe you should make backup copies - although I don't think
you will ever want to go back. <G>
Look for the "Video Setup" button on the new page.
No warranties expressed or implied, but I would like feedback from all
brave enough to try it. <g>
