http://www.egroups.com will permit you to assemble a private mailing list
which you, as moderator, can determine who is allowed to join. It is a
mailing list, but the only persons who may sign up for it are those who
are invited to do so by the moderator. This is a free service supported
by one and two line text ads that are automatically appended to every
message posted. None of the ads ever have any obnoxious content and none
of the list members are ever required to order any of the goods and
services being advertised. I myself moderate such a group on egroups.com
which I have set up for exclusive use by my relatives. I established this
group about a year ago. There has never been an incidence of spam
messages being posted to the list. One has to be an invited member of the
list in order to post a message. If you, as moderator, should ever decide
that you don't like what a list member has to say, then you may kick him
off the list. The list is subject to whatever controls the moderator
may want to enforce. You can be the boss.
All the best,
Sam Heywood
