L.D. & Ricsi,

I too feel limited with DOS and OS/2, feel a need to go with Linux and maybe
NetBSD or FreeBSD. Graphic Web browsing is limited and clumsy with Arachne and
Netscape 4.04, maybe would go better with a newer Netscape (4.61) on a newer,
faster computer. I use Lynx a lot. I notice the Arachne site now works with
OS/2 Lynx, the gzip problem has apparently been fixed. I am now far behind on
email and news after moving across the apartment complex because of a floor
going bad, and then the computer power supply going bad and the APC Back-UPS Pro
420 showing its old age, not working right.

I think my computer booting into year 1994 or 2094 might possibly be a Y2K
problem, might try setting the year to 1999 or 2001 before shutting down. But I
still wonder how the computer decides between 1994 and 2094.

Regarding DJGPP, which is 32-bit only, there is a ZIP picker at

Ricsi> Because of the need for DPMI the compiled programs run only on 386+.
(This is IMHO not as much of a program, because I personally would not use
a graphical browser on a 286 or lower)

Somebody, like Michael Polak maybe, ought to do a survey via this list and the
Arachne Web site, to get an idea how many people use Arachne on 286 or lower, to
determine whether continued support for 286 and lower is needed. I will likely
never get the chance to see how Arachne runs or crawls on 286 or lower. What
else would one use for graphic browsing on 286 or lower? Net-Tamer? New Deal?
Any kind of Web browsing seems to be quite limited on 286 or lower, from what I
have seen with DOSLYNX.
