Herb,
I have a K6-300 on a laptop, but have not yet got the PCMCIA modem to work
under DOS although I think that I am close! Once I get the modem operating
under DOS, the first thing that I will do is to install Arachne on the laptop.
I have used System Commander to set up three operating systems on the
computer, one DOS, one W98, and a future one for Linux.
One thing that I discovered is that W98 sets the PCMCIA modem up as COM 3,
INT 10. Nothing that I did could get the modem to set up as COM 2, --- until
I disabled COM 2 on the motherboard(?), and voila! the modem is now set up as
COM 2 under W98! Since I use Compuserve for my ISP, and TAPCIS for my e-mail
program, I installed the Windoze version of TAPCIS to use it with IE. That
program reaches over into my DOS operating system partition and uses the DOS
version of TAPCIS. (All messages are also saved in the DOS partition.) The
strange thing is that when TAPCIS dials into Compuserve to get my mail, it
reports, "Opening COM2 - COM2 not found," and then proceeds to dial!
I don't believe that you ever indicated if you were trying to use Arachne in
a DOS box under Windoze or under true DOS, or what brand your computer is.
Compaqs seem to have enough proprietary requirements that they give a whole
lot of problems.
Persevere! Strange things happen when you least expect it.

Dear Arachne Listers
I give up! It does not appear that Arachne will work with my new
computer.
Yesterday, I installed ver 1.66 on my old computer without
problem and logged on to my ISP with PAP/CHAP. This verifies that
there is nothing wrong with my installation setup and no amount
of tinkering with script or arachne.cfg will be of any help. I
even made config.sys and autoexec the same on my new computer the same as
on the old. It seems that there is something incompatible with the
new computer hardware that I am unable to identify.
The header for arachne.cfg indicates that it was tested with a
K5/133. Perhaps it just won't work with a K6. I don't know.
Anyway thanks again to all of you that offered advice and
suggestion. Your input was much appreciated.
Perhaps I will try again when there is a new version.
Sincerely
Herb Valliant<<
