I was looking into this myself recently and found the following on the web
at http://www.windows-help.net/windows95/start-07.htm . I haven't actually
tried it, but it has a ring of authenticity to it.
They say, in summary...
In Windows 95 you can hold down F8 during the bootup process and DOS will
load instead of Windows.
If you don't want to do that all the time, you can modify the hidden file
MSDOS.SYS. Use Windows Explorer to find the file in the root (C:/)
directory. Save a copy in the TEMP directory or somewhere, just in case.
Right-click on the file and uncheck "Read Only" if it's checked. (I think
you may also want to uncheck "Hidden" but they don't say to do that.) Use
Wordpad or similar to edit the file as follow: in the [Options] section,
change BootGUI=1 to BootGUI=0 and resave the file. It's a good idea to go
back and remark the file Read Only and Hidden. That should do it.
According to Article ID Q118579 in the Micorsoft KnowledgeBase, there is
also an attribute called "BootWin" in MSDOS.SYS. They say BootWin = 1
forces Windows 95 to load at startup. A setting of 0 disables Windows 95.
Then they make the cryptic remark "this is useful only if you have MS-DOS
5.x or 6.x on the computer.) However, somehow I have the impression that
changing BootGUI is better than changing BootWin.
You might want to wait and see if anyone else chimes in to respond to your
query or my response, in case there's something funky about all this that I
don't know about. (Especially since I have not actually tried any of this!)
