Response 1:
Now why in the world did someone replace your case when only your power
supply was bad??? If they didn't know enough to just replace your power
supply, then I would imagine that they wouldn't know what the batteries were
for. (PC Power and Cooling has power supplies for many configurations. The
only problem that I had when I replaced a power supply with one of their
power supply's was that their's was so quiet that I didn't think that it was
working when I turned on the computer and was just about ready to turn it off
and pull the P/S when the computer started to boot.)
Four batteries would give you 6-volts. If you have a voltmeter, you can check
to see if the batteries are good or bad. (Or go down to your nearest Radio
Shack or ham radio store.)
>>How will I know if I am plugging it in backwards? Connector plug has four
little nearly square holes.<<
Response 2:
Only two holes are active. One of the holes on the battery pack that I have
is plugged. Since I have not yet pulled the old battery pack, I don't know
what the connection looks like, but I would guess that it has 3 pins so the
connector would be able to go in only one way. Otherwise, check the
connector on the motherboard and see if the connection has + or - marks, then
identify which of the wires from your battery is positive or negative. One
of the pin holes on my battery pack connector has an arrow embossed on the
side of the connector and what looks like a minus sign above the arrow. At
this point in time, I am assuming that is the negative wire, but will make
sure before I try to install it.
>>But the year 1994/2094 problem existed long before the power supply went
bad, so presumably was not due to losing the CMOS.<<
Response 3:
If the batteries were bad before your P/S failed, it would give you the same
indications. The fact that the date problem occurs when the computer is off
for a long time tends to indicate that your problem is due to batteries.
Hope this helps.
