  If you're running a 'nix, you can save an iso9660 image to a 
partition, and then mount that partition as an iso file system.

  When you're getting ready to burn a backup CD for instance, you 
first convert the tarballs or file heirarchy to an iso image.  Then 
you can mount and verify it before actually writing it to the disk.

  The mounted iso image behaves exactly as if it's a CD in a drive... 
except maybe for booting off of it.  It seems even that should be
possible with LILO or maybe even LOADLIN, but I wouldn't want to 
bet anything on it.
