It sounds like the problem now is not due to pine but your sendmail.
try editing /etc/sendmail.cf and change DS to
DSmail.yourisp-or-pop3account.com and
DM to DMyourisp.com and see if that works.  You'll need restart sendmail
for it to re-read
the sendmail.cf before it will take effect.  I've seen some mention of
changing Dj also,
but I never had to use that.  These measures are needed now because
ISP's try to avoid
abuse of their MTA for such things as spamming.  Open relays are frowned
upon nowadays.
Oh, and also keep in mind that some of the free mail services require
you to first fetch
you're mail, then they open a time window for you to send mail -- for
same reason mentioned
above.
