No, Ray, I haven't tried Gencad.  As a Structural Engineer, virtually all my 
drafting is simple 2D drafting and "[L]ine" is the command that I use most.  
Likewise, AutoCad keyboard command for relative distances and direction 
(@20'5"<45) does what I need to do.  I use the trackball when I need to start 
or end a line at a particular location or when I need to select an item for 
moving/copying.

AutoCad does have the capability to rename commands or to create keyboard 
shortcuts as you have described.
