OK ... long story ...

I had a pentium 200.
It was set up to boot into DOS 7 from Win95.
And I often used DOS.
EG I had my mail/news set completely to run under DOS, for smaller browsing
I used Arachne, ...
If I needed multitasking, I typed win, or lin
(lin is a bat loading linux (redhat6) via loadlin)

Than I bought a new computer (Athlon 800MHz) installed Win98, which now
defaults to run win98GUI, in a bootmenu I can select dos 7.10 and Mandrake
Linux.

The 'old' computer's HDD was backed up on the new 30 GB HDD, and got
completely wiped out, and I installed Redhat Linux 7 on it.
It now acts as a Linux gateway for the new athlon. (I have a 24/7 internet
connection via cable)
It is/should be turned on 24/7 and has FTP/SAMBA/SSH/HTTPD(S)/....
installed, and masquerades for the athlon.

I'm planning to completely switch over to Linux also on the 'workstation',
but don't have the time, and I'm also a bit lazy :)

The 'old' pentium has only a powercable and 2 TP Network cables attached to
it, and I simply *LOVE* the ability to ssh into it, and do _everything_ I
want from wherever I am on the net ... GREAT !

Yes ... this was necessary, because my default boot choice switched with
the new computer to win 98 instead of dos7.

under dos it was UKA_PPP and in windows it's spoon coupled with soupgate.
But there are other (more advanced) choices than spoon eg VSoup.

http://members.xoom.com/tomtorfs/soupgate.html
(dos, win32, OS/2 and Linux versions)

Yes ... it needs an existing FIDO-net setup to work ...
(but actually I love GOLDED (my FIDO message editor) so much, that I use it
for FIDO, Internet Email and Internet Newsgroups ;)
