Now I see, the "gate" in Soupgate refers to fido <-> Internet, therefore is not
of any use for me. But I have seen newsgroup messages using fidonet <-> Usenet
gateway. I guess this subject can be dropped now.

Ricsi> I never said that it was preinstalled !!!
I wrote that this was a 'special offer' for technical university students,
because slobodan wants to get them away from linux.
I bought win98 before the new computer because it costed virtually nothing.
(65 ATS compared to over 1500 ATS in the stores.)
I also bought win2k because it costed 95 ATS compared to 5500 ATS in
  stores.
(I kg bread costs ca. 25 ATS)

Great marketing by MS! Serenity Systems ought to do something like that for
eComStation, successor to IBM OS/2 Warp 4 client. They need the publicity more
than MS!

Ricsi> Think of it ... DOS was made for the 80086 ....
it was already outdated with 80286 which offered a limited protected mode
and DIRECT (without nasty and slow tricks) support for 16 MB RAM !

And DOS Extenders eliminate DOS !!
(eg they switch in protected mode, where there is no DOS !!
if they need to issue a DOS function call, than they have to switch back to
real mode, make the call, and switch back to protected mode ....
  SLOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOWW)
Why not use an OS that can utilize features of 80286+ ??

Yes, DOS was made for the 8086/8088 with no protected mode. So was the Intel
CPU architecture, with its persisting distinction between conventional and
extended memory. Apparently, even with DPMI, they can't do the things with DOS
that they do with more advanced OSes. Maybe that's why MS wants to break free
of DOS in favor of WinNT/2000/Whistler. But a 32-bit DPMI Arachne should be an
improvement over the current status, where Arachne may fail to start due to
insufficient low memory.

DOS is still good for some things, like testing video modes and running LOADLIN
(for Linux) or DOSBOOT (for NetBSD).

Ricsi> May I ask what the itent is in using 2 unixish OSes ???
Choose EITHER linux OR *BSD !

There are differences between Linux and the BSDs, and I might want to be able to
compare Linux with NetBSD. You have two Windowses (98 and 2000), don't you?
