That was the GUS patches, as used by the Cubic player. And, yes, it
did make a difference to the sound of MIDI playback. It can also be
used, I seem to remember, with Florian's FreeCDP Player.
Do I remember it right, Florian ?
And there are other sound patch collections. I found a website of
such collections. It might have been at:

Some of them were somewhat smaller than 5 MB, and of varying quality.
Worth a try, if a no-name soundcard is not up to much. You WILL need
plenty of hard disk space, tho'.
