Hi gangue,
I'm back!
But to what? 586 e-mails in the Arachne folder/file, but I've worked
my way through them. Once again Michael has released a new (1.70)
version just as I'm coming to terms with getting 1.69 working the way
I want it to. BUT, even Michael says it looks bad! Hmmmm! will leave
that till the gurus amongst you move on to 1.71 or whatever.
The Boss (Ella) and myself had a nice break in Sunny Benidorm on the
Costa Blanca in Spain. Weather a little bit mixed, but drank a FEW
beers, watched the world go by from a few cafes and just relaxed.
Booked this as a package holiday, hotel allocated on arrival at
airport. We ended up in a four star (Hotel Marina) with full three
meals per day, small suite of rooms at Hotel. Use of Gym and Jacuzzi,
indoor pool and so on. Paid the price for a guaranteed two star
hotel, so quite happy (VBG 8>} ) with the results.
Just before Christmas, I pointed out how the world was a smaller,
friendlier place amongst Internet users. Then we come back to the
horrific story of the two twin babies "sold" as if they were slaves,
or pots and pans, over the web. From here, we see it as if they were
almost put up for auction, never mind adoption. We are told they were
first offered to a couple for $4000, but they could'nt come up with
the cash quickly enough, so they were then placed at $3000 with an
American couple, but then taken away and placed with these English
parents who offered $6000 for them. The two babies have been paraded
on television, and it seems as if the "adoption" was not fully legal
due to paperwork being incorrect and so on.
The poor kids (who will forever now be known as the Internet babies)
were finally taken into protective care by the Welsh Social Services
people, a local/national government protection of minors agency, and
hopefully things will be sorted out properly for them. I think
personally the whole thing to be scandalous, and I sincerely hope
international laws and co-operation will be put into place to prevent
this sort of thing happening again. I have no doubt LD will have some
thoughts on this also. We worry about SPAM, when unscrupulous
adoption "facilitators" are allowed to advertise and con people like
this for babies as if they were a commodity like sugar, or cars or
whatever.
Enough of the "soapbox"! The days are back to getting longer again,
so we are (in the northern hemisphere at least) heading back towards
sunlight and warmth, although to-day it's gone up to -3 degrees here
in Edinburgh. Now you know why I like to get a week in Spain at this
time of year. Let's hope the new year will see world events
improving, and the Internet being put to good use and not the junk
above.
Regards
Mel
