  Nope, no problem at all in Linux Arachne.  The graphic
isn't even 5k.... remember, I made a 2500x60 graphic just
to see if that surpassed the limit.  Linux Arachne handled
that just fine.  (but you're right, they're idiots... a
graphic for a plain color background is STUPID.  All they
have to do is <body bgcolor="#ffff00">)

  Clicking the link for the main page does make Linux Arachne 
disappear though, so while the graphic may be a contributing
factor in DOS, it's not a factor at all in Linux.
