Hello Bart:

If you installed XEDIT40.APM you probably did not get any button to
invoke an external editor at the composer screen. I installed
XEDIT40.APM and I could not get a button for an external editor in
composer. Then I installed EXTED150.APM, an APM that I have used
before. This one works with Arachne, version 1.70, rev. 3 and it
does provide you with a button to invoke an external editor in
composer. EXTED150.APM is no longer available at the Arachne download
page. Anyone wanting it can get it from me via private email. File
size is 5023 bytes.

The installation of EXTED150.APM will cause the following line to be
written at the bottom of MIME.CFG:

file/extedit.dgi       |@EDIT.COM mail.tmp
                         ^^^^^^^^
Edit this line so that the name of your favorite text editor appears
where I have indicated by the karat symbols. The command to open the
editor may be opened also with any parameters desired, so I understand.

Another thing that will happen when you install EXTED150.APM is that
your MAIL.HTM file will be overwritten by a new MAIL.HTM file. You
probably will not like this because you will no longer have the "Address
Book" and the "Make Address Book" ikons. Also you will have a red box in
the upper left corner unless you have "earth.gif". (I can send this file
too by private email. "earth.gif" came provided originally with an older
Arachne version.) To avoid entirely the problems caused by the
overwriting of MAIL.HTM by installing EXTED150.APM, I suggest you back
up your original MAIL.HTM and use your backup copy instead, but only after
you have made a minor change in the code. The paragraph referring to the
composer should be edited so that it looks like this:

<TD ALIGN=CENTER>
<FORM ACTION="file://reply.dgi">
<INPUT TYPE=HIDDEN NAME="fn" VALUE="nullmail.tmp">
<INPUT TYPE=HIDDEN NAME="to" VALUE="from">
<INPUT TYPE=IMAGE SRC="mail04.ikn" BORDER=0><BR><U>C</U>ompose mail
</FORM>

If you decide to use your backup copy of MAIL.HTM, and if you fail to
properly change the code in your backup copy of MAIL.HTM, your external
editor feature will not work and you will not get the extra button in the
composer. These instructions apply to the installation of EXTED150.APM.
