Hello, world;

This is Ray making contact with the outside world from my 'new' 700 MHz
machine (cobbled together from flea market parts, mostly). After I sold
my old 233 MHz machine to a friend, I had no end of trouble getting the
new one to work *my* way. The worst thing was that I couldn't get my
trusty monochrome ISA card to work, and I'm a dedicated dual monitors man;
in fact, I'd rather have a 486 with dual monitors than a super computer
without. Just in case any of you confront the same problem when upgrading
your hardware, this is what I learned (through trial and error): You
can't use dual monitors if you have an AGP video card, because this kind
of card steals ALL of the upper video memory. PCI video cards are OK, but
FSSR, you must use the very highest slot, using slot #2 produced
intermittent results, and using anything lower for the PCI killed the
monochrome card completely; God knows why.

BTW, several weeks ago I asked for help concerning the fact that a
friend's copy of Arachne had mysteriously stopped connecting. It turns
out that Arachne.cfg had somehow become corrupted, and I'm sure that this
was Arachne's own doing because only certain lines were altered. In
particular 'password' became 'ssword' and the formerly blank 'WaitFor' and
'Response' lines all became infected with gibberish; no other lines were
affected.  Thoughts?

P.S. Where is the Grammar Sheriff? I miss the dread shadow of her
judgements.
