what goes on with mailing list?

Dear List:

    Recently I tried out the supposed feature of a mailing "list" in
the form of a file "@friends" and decided to use this as an URL to send
mail with.  My SMTP server decidedly refused to send anything using
the term <NUL> for the "list" file.  What can be done?  Many thanks for
a reply or an answer.
