Once I came across an application who had compatibility problems... Its
name is "Appcad" or something like that. It is in fact a microwave
calculation program, dealing with microstrip lines and so on. Its authors
(I believe it is a Hewlett-Packard product) state that the DOS version was
using the video memory in a non standard way when dealing with graphics and
they specifically advice for using DOS versions prior to 7.x. It is true,
some functions of the this program do not work, neither under DOS 7 nor
DR-DOS, but they work fine with MS-DOS 6.
This is the only DOS program having such problems I know about.
>Even NASA has upgraded to 486's now, haven't they?
Don't get this wrong! NASA is not using 486's in the outer space, but SPARC
ERC32's. This micro's speed is comparable with the speed of a 486, but the
similarities end up here. The SPARC is far more reliable and is build to
resist to rougher environment conditions. And I am pretty sure its design
is better than the 486's design. Again, I must say 8086 and its derivatives
up to Pentium represent for the hardware world kind of what Windows
represents for the software world. :-)
