Dear Terri:
Yes, you have been known to take it upon yourself to issue citations
for spelling violations also, but only in cases where the transgressions
appear to be directly attributable to some failure to obey the rules of
grammar. I remember well all of the cases in which you issued many
citations for spelling "it's" when the word should have been spelled as
"its", and vice versa. Of course either spelling would pass right on by
a good spell-checker, but a good Grammar Sheriff would feel compelled to
throw the book at any violator who would fail to heed the rules on this
very fine point. I must confess that I too am sometimes guilty of
committing such oversights myself. Many of us occasionally fail to devote
sufficient attention to some very important, although seemingly miniscule
and nitpicking details in the minds of many habitual offenders. For
this reason we need good enforcement officials to square them away and
set them straight.
All the best,
Sam Heywood
