Hmmm, are you using "terminal mode" or a login script?  If so, go to Arachne
PPP setup screen and blank out the login script lines, and use terminal
mode.  Then answer any prompts from your ISPs server manually.  Try to
remember the exact phrases used by your ISP to re-write your login script. 
PAP/CHAP might also work, as suggested by Steven.  The other problem is
server related.  It could be the ISPs server does not support BOOTP---call
your ISP.  Some newer servers assume everyone uses Win9X and have
implemented DHCP only.  In this case, you'll have to try some flavor of
Windows.
