We have all, at some time in our modeming lifetimes, been in a position
where a large file [anything over 50K] was nearly impossible to download
short of a dozen or so tries, and often even then failed.
I personally found that 1.66 was the best working Arachne past 1.50, but
I have a "high end" machine. What would be good is for people who have
equivalent computers to the King's hash out which version in the 1.60s
works best... once that decision was made, it would be relatively simple
to "take apart" the exe version and break it into more easily handled
packages which could be downloaded relatively quickly, even with a 14.4
modem. [I lived with 2400 so long, I thought 14.4 for long distance
access was fantastic!! <G>]
You guys fight it out among yourselves, and then I'll volunteer to break
up the correct version [if I have it or someone can point me to it in
the archives] into smaller files and make them available via direct URL.
I'm volunteering primarily because my ISPs servers don't get the hit
load that Angelfire or other web-based 'webpage sites' do, and because
my ISP offers just about the fastest cleanest internet connectivity that
can be done ... [what's twice as good as T1 lines??] ... so there would
be less chance of server drop-out on my end.
So you guys fight it out, let me know which verision "Seek" should try,
and then we'll see if we can get him up and running on Arachne that's
even better than his first experience.
