Just that Slackware and Debian both have the reputation of
being distributions requiring more expertise than most others.
Though my experience with them is kind of dated, I also found
that to be the case.

In that case, I'd suggest you follow your own advice and get
a multi-distro pack like lsl's tri-linux, or cheapbyte's mondo
pack. ;-)
But seriously, most distributions have more problems with
SCSI than with IDE.
