you could really learn how to make "Linux jump
through hoops" without ever having to actually
install it on your machine.

I'm with you on this one.  The best thing for
a newbie to do is go to their public library
and borrow a copy of "Linux for Dummies" or 
"Linux for Idiots" or "Teach Yourself Linux"
or any other beginner's book on Linux/Unix.
Then use BasicLinux to go through the book 
step by step.  No partitioning, no installation.  
Just unzip and run (in DOS).
