I'm with you on this one. The best thing for
a newbie to do is go to their public library
and borrow a copy of "Linux for Dummies" or
"Linux for Idiots" or "Teach Yourself Linux"
or any other beginner's book on Linux/Unix.
Then use BasicLinux to go through the book
step by step. No partitioning, no installation.
Just unzip and run (in DOS).
