Thanks for all the help.  I did what someone on the list suggested and
went to my local library and found a few books that had some dos info. 
I skipped the idea of using freedos and instead downloaded drdos7 to my
laptop.  Installation was a breeze.  Messing with the autoexec.bat took
some figuring but thanks to info received here and from those library
books, I was able to set it up so my mouse worked and it opens to
dosstart.  I worked with it for several hours before I got the right
combination. Now I need to work on how to get it to go to the c:\ prompt
when I exit dosstart.
