It's an improved version.
The version which came with DOS could only handle one file, and the
filesize was more limited.

PS: Do you know any similar linux editor ?? (something in between vim and
emacs, which can handle multiple files, and has the features of ms-edit ?)
at the moment i'm using pico, but it is hmmm ...
