You have given examples of how to change the SearchEngine in arachne.cfg.

Exactly _what_ does the hardcoded google function in core do and how is
it accessed ?

I'm assuming this function is different in some way from the user-
definable one. Among the versions I have loaded, (1.62/66/67/70)
this function is only hardcoded in A1.70.
I see from A1.69 changes.txt that is where google became embedded, but
there was no mention that the .cfg variable was obsoleted.

Maybe it's just used if the variable is blank ? 
That duplication would be strange if Michael was concerned about keeping
the size down. He did complain about 2k for CSS.
Why don't I try it ? I'd rather talk about it. <G>
