According to the website you supplied,  Reis's "telephone" was not
capable of transmitting human speech over a wire, only simple sounds.
Perhaps it would be more accurate to say that Reis invented a
forerunner to the telephone.

The reason few people have heard of him is that there was little
practical value to his "telephone".
