The corruption of law enforcement officers is not
nearly the problem; they are merely the visible tip
of the iceberg.

One of the things I said in my flyer that I produced
with my pc/printer, was that the so-called 'War on Drugs'
was being run like a speed trap.

Every legislative body has enough lawyers, who also have
partners in the home district, who make a lot of money
defending drug cases. No way are they ever going to pass
any law which would cut into the income of their brothers
at the bar. All the debates we have about legalization,
or support for NORML online, or examples of how things
are working out in Switzerland or Holland... are moot.

You are never going to hear about this in the media
because the drug demogoguery is used by candidates to
get elected, and those candidates spend a lot of money
in media ad campaigns. It was something I realized in
speaking with my local newspaper editor.

The only reason you hear about this now, is that with the
previous six times they searched my property, there was
nothing I could do about it. This was in Florida, Louisiannna,
and now most recently, Arkansas. But now we all have pcs
and communicate without the filtering of media editors.

Every arrest means money for the bondsman and his attorney.
Every case has 'court costs' among which are contributions
to the retirement fund of the judge.

If they find the evidence, they can seize personal and
real estate property, and I have seen them setup cases for
just this purpose. A notorious one in arkansas involved an
80 year old married couple with a nice farm on the urban
fringe. Someone planted dope on the back forty, a mile from
the house. the whole 160 acres was seized for 'manufacture
of a controlled substance'.

To be sure, they did not go to jail and beat the case, but
that didnt matter, by the time they got thru paying for the
lawyers, the farm went on the market anyway, and that made
the real estate friends of the LEO system very happy.

The United States legal system is not the most corrupt, but
it is not good enough either. The communication powers of
our collective PCs will permit some consensus to arise on
what should be done.

I would like to see a wireless net evolve so that we are
not at the mercy of the transnational corporations which
own the wire/fiber grid, and ultimately, that will happen,
if for no other reason than that it is gonzo cheaper to
lay lines on a circuit board for a transmitter than to
lay lines under the ground across miles of landscape.

As noted, even with T1, video conferencing left a lot to
be desired. But wireless has far more potential for bandwidth.
But as we see above, even ascii can communicate.
