Hi List, I have a friend who started using Arachne when I did. He come's from a windows background but has discovered that it's limiting his computing. So now uses dos, and Arachne for his Internet and Email.
I have been his Arachne elmer so far, but he has problems with Arachne that I haven't had, and AFAIK no other list members have eather. He complains of persistant loss of certain insight DGI files that just disapear, so he cannot forward or move his email. He is getting pretty wound up with Arachne 1.70r3 but I don't think it's the program because we would all have the same problem. His machine: Hewlett Packard Vectra 486DX 50Mhz, local bus HD and local bus Cirrus Logic 1Mb SVGA, 8Mb RAM and a 56K flex external modem. Memory's a bit tight but it should be fine for Arachne. Last Friday I formatted the HD and did a fresh install of dos 6.2 and installed my copy of Arachne 1.70r3, running from the HD, he has installed a ramdisk before so he can do it again, we were getting short of time. There are no virus's I checked with F-Prot myself before I left. I also went to the Arachne website and downloaded a couple of APM's such as the zipviewer, and one of the HTML editors, I think he has subsequently downloaded some extra "backgrounds and screensavers" APM's from the Arachne website. After meeting him today he informs me the DGI files are missing again and his email forwarding and moving is stuffed. If his inbox has quite a few messages in it he says the INDEX dosen't work. On trying the newly downloaded APM's, he tell's me they don't work, but when he check's his "installed packages" they are all there. I have enquired if he has configured Arachne to use the new APM's, and got the response "Arachne says they are all installed..why doe's it say that if I have to muck about with it myself !" . So dear list members you have an idea of how my Friday evening meal goe's..washed down with Arachne indigestion. In view of this, and my own inability to explain to him why his DGI files evaporate in the night, I have taken the liberty of subscribing him to this list. This message is an introduction so when he appears and asks his questions the kind members of the list are previously briefed with the hardware and the situation so far. My stomach and I enjoy Arachne problems, but I am not experienced enough to help him with his Arachne problem. I therefore ask if L.D can Mother him from afar, and Glenn if you would keep an eye open too. His homework is to read Clarence, to make sure he isn't doing something completely silly.
